Find the right shampoo and conditioner
This is the first step toward achieving shiny hair, says Rubin.
If your hair is fine: Stick with products that won’t weigh down your hair. “Flat hair can look dull,” says D.J. Try a gentle or volumizing shampoo and a detangler, which is lighter than conditioner.
If your hair is curly or thick: “It’s probably on the dry side,” says Rubin. “To see more shine, you have to boost your hair’s moisture level.” Opt for shampoos and conditioners that are nourishing, and treat yourself to a deep-conditioning treatment like Phytotherathrie Phytocitrus Mask every few days.
If your hair is color-treated: “You’ve already made a major effort to boost shine by coloring your hair,” says Rubin. To keep the color true and your hair looking silky, use a shampoo and conditioner designed for chemically treated hair. “They’re milder than other shampoos because they don’t contain as many hair-stripping detergents,” says Rubin. Every few days, replace your color-care hair products with a shampoo or conditioner that deposits a small amount of shine-boosting color onto your hair. Many salons will create or custom-blend these for you.
